Mark Mahaney is a friend from Hometapes' Savannah days - and someone we've gotten closer to as we've moved further apart. Based in New York, Mark has been flourishing as an independent photographer - shooting editorial pieces (stuff you can see in magazines like SEED, Res, and Print) and making his way into American Photo Magazine's "Top 10 Young Photographers" list of 2006. This year is bringing him even more accolades, as Print just called him one of the twenty "New Visual Artists of 2007." His street cred is most impressive - but his pictures are even more so.

Mark makes his Hometapes cover art debut on Paul Duncan's Above The Trees. We're still not sure how this picture happened, but it feels as if we were standing right there with Mark - camera in hand, deer in sight. These are the sort of pictures Mark Mahaney makes : point blank depictions of people, places, and things that, in all their simplicity, can twist you up inside and make you feel something altogether new.
